Limited Release to the Rescue - Opening Weekend 4/28/06

Four movies opening up around the nation in wide release and 6 in limited release. Seems like the indies are kicking ass this weekend.

Wide Release

Akeelah and the Bee -
Another spelling bee movie. The difference with this one? Well, it's got black people. *Shruggs* This movie is out to prove that black people can spell "toof'eses" properly . . . or something like that. The 11-year old protagonist of this letter-based movie gets help from Laurence Fishbourne, who may or may not ask her to take a pill to enhance her spelling skills. "Whoa, I know Spell-Fu".

RV - Robin Williams shoots his career in the foot with this family "comedy" about a dad that forces his family to go on vacation in a gigantic recreational vehicle. Hilarity ensues . . . I think.

Stick It - A gymnastics movie that looks interesting? I'd never personally admit to that . . . but something deep inside me wants me to believe that it will be. Oh no, did I just type that? Well, the commercials are really helping. Who doesn't like seeing girls bounce off balance beams crotch first.

United 93 - I enjoyed Paul Greengrass's entry into the Bourne franchise, so this is the movie I'm most interested in seeing this weekend. My wife asked me an interesting question though, if everyone on that flight died . . . how do they know what happened?? I hope they don't take too much creative licenses with this story and try to honor the people that perished properly. It's getting rave reviews from pretty much every critic in the nation . . . I wonder if Osama bin Laden will like it though. Hmm . . .

Limited Releases (Synopsis taken from Yahoo! Movies. They just sum things up so nicely there.)

Killer Diller -
After getting arrested, a guitarist organizes his fellow felons in their religious half-way house to form a blues band.

The Lost City -
Andy Garcia directs and stars in a story about an apolitical Havana nightclub owner caught up in Castro's revolution.

Water -
Set in India in the 1930s, a young girl, Chuyia, is widowed and sent to live in penitence in a widow's ashram.

The Whore's Son -

If you go see United 93 make sure your review doesn't have any spoilers because I can't go this weekend.
